Hugh Laurie To Record Blues Record

On July 26th, 2010 James wrote on the subject of Celebrity PR,Music PR.

LONDON: 26th July 2010: Hugh Laurie, the award-winning actor, writer, director and musician has signed a recorded music deal with Warner Music Entertainment (WME), an imprint of the Warner Music Group. Laurie is the star of Fox’s hit drama series ‘House’, the world’s most-watched TV show, a role which has garnered him two Golden Globes, the People’s Choice and Teen Choice for Best Actor, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Television Critics Association Awards and five Emmy nominations.

Hugh Laurie Blues

The agreement will see Laurie release a New Orleans blues album, to be recorded this summer and autumn, and distributed worldwide by Warner Bros Records. He will collaborate with a range of vocal and musical talent on the record with the goal of producing an album with mainstream, international appeal. Joe Henry, the acclaimed two-time Grammy Award winner, will produce the album. Henry has worked with diverse artists such as Teddy Thompson, Solomon Burke, Ani Di Franco, Aimee Mann, Loudon Wainwright III, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint. His work on film scores includes ‘I’m Not There’ and ‘Knocked Up’ and he has co-written songs for Madonna and Madeleine Peyroux, amongst others.

Laurie, who has played piano for much of his life, is predominantly self-taught (after creative differences with his childhood teacher) and has sung, performed and written music throughout his career. He is actively involved in the musical content used on ‘House’ and his character Gregory House has played blues piano and guitar regularly on the programme. Hugh is also keyboardist in the ‘Band From TV’ charity group and most recently contributed to a track on Meat Loaf’s latest album, produced by Rob Cavallo.

Hugh Laurie said “I am drunk with excitement at this opportunity. I know the history of actors making music is a checkered one, but I promise no one will get hurt. I am particularly thrilled to be working with Joe Henry, who has produced some of my favourite records of all time, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Joe Henry said “All musicians are actors to begin with – our jobs being to embody characters and articulate stories for three and four minutes at a time. I’ve been a great fan of Hugh’s work on screen, and believe purely that he is investing the same wit, intelligence and emotional generosity into his music.”

Conrad Withey, President, Warner Music Entertainment said “I am a huge fan of all Hugh’s work and have enjoyed his musicianship on ‘House’ and in many other shows over the years. The world already knows how wonderfully versatile and talented Hugh is so this first album is an exciting opportunity to put the spotlight on his passion for New Orleans blues.

Hugh is exactly the kind of artist that WME enjoys working with. We look forward to building on the incredible success Hugh has had in ‘House’ with a music project that will establish Hugh at the top of his game in a new artistic arena.”

10 years of festival and clubbing lingo

On June 23rd, 2010 admin wrote on the subject of Festival PR,Music PR.

The UK’s premier dance festival, GlobalGathering, will be celebrating its tenth year this summer with its most spectacular production to date – the festival canvassed festival goers to provide an overview of some of the wittiest clubbing and festival slang spanning their 10 year history…

Fetsiuval PR

• Monkey juggler- the lone festival dancer, dancing wildly to a rhythm only he can hear

• Camp Tramp – he hasn’t washed, hasn’t changed his clothes for three days and now here he is, beggin for ciggys

• The tent commandment – thou shalt not leave the putting up of thy tent until 3 in the morning

• Trespassing out – passing out in a tent that is not your own. You don’t know how you got there. You don’t know who these people next to you are….

• The Ejector Selector – bouncer

• Tesco disco – club where everybody’s ‘stacking the shelves’

• Doomcore – very dark techno genre – often played at clubs with names like ‘3rd World War’

• Shape Shifter – particularly bad dancer – no particular style

• Keeping it Tidy – keeping yourself nice and not ‘losing it’ in a club

• Luft-wafter – a topless German techno enthusiast with body odour issues

• Mum ‘n’ Bass – a woman of advanced years still giving it large on the dancefloor

• Big Fish Little Fish Cardboard Box – popular early rave dance

• Shed – a new music style- somewhere between house and garage

• All gone Pete Tong – everything’s gone wrong

• All tong gone Pete Wrong – everything’s gone very, very wrong indeed

• Its All Gravy – everything is cool

• Beefa – Ibiza

• Neckless wonder – bouncer

• Moon-burnt – pale from too much clubbing

• A bit chish and fips – a confused state

• Ounce-bouncer – fat dancer

• The Crapocalypse – when you enter a festival/club toilet, desperate, only to find it unbelievable filthy and without any paper

• Rave flu – popular affliction affecting the hardcore clubber and the cause of many Mondays off work

• Giving it ‘shaggy’ – adopting the expression and refrain of Jamaican popstar Shaggy when a bouncer has smelled a cigarette and is searching around you – “it wasn’t me”

• Hooves – decent speakers; “they hoof it”

• Dibble – those who confiscate hooves

• Nice one – party without dibble

• Golden Hour – An hour before the club closes, best chance to pull

• Dance-apella: A dance performed without music. Usually absent-mindedly, or to burn off excess energy.

• Deja-moo: The feeling you’ve seen that cow somewhere before at another rave.

• Disco nap: Going to sleep one or two hours before a big night of clubbing.

• On a mission – a trip to the shops to buy food at 4am – usually preceeded by an hour long debate on who will undertake the ‘mission’

LONDON, Monday 14th June 2010: MySpace will give one unsigned act the opportunity to open for the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, at this year’s iTunes festival as he returns with his superb new album Scream, out on June 21st.

ozzy-osbourne

The social networking giant will be giving one unsigned band this incredible once-in-a-lifetime chance – to play a support set for rock’s most enduring legend, Ozzy Osbourne, at the festival on the 3rd of July.

The site’s new music expert and founder of the celebrated Best of MySpace podcasts, Gill Mills, will be scouring the site for undiscovered rock talent and asking unsigned bands to enter the competition by revealing the most rock ‘n’ roll thing they have ever done. Only bands with experience trashing hotel rooms, biting the heads off bats and driving cars into swimming pools need apply!

Once Gill has pulled together a shortlist of 10 hopefuls, Ozzy will pick a winner to open for him at the event. The winner will be revealed by Ozzy in a live MySpace web chat on the 25th June.

Ozzy said: “Throughout my career I’ve felt this obligation to give up-and-coming bands a leg up in the music business. I’ve taken out bands from Motley Crue to Metallica to System of a Down and Slipknot on their first big tours. I’m looking to give a new band a huge f**king break by having them open the show.”

Renowned new music scout Gill Mills brings the freshest and most exciting new music to MySpace users through her weekly Best of MySpace podcast and her popular NME radio show. Having aired tracks on MySpace from artists including Ladyhawke, Yeasayer, White Lies and La Roux before they were discovered, her ear for new talent is undisputed.

Gill’s passion for unsigned bands continues with this latest partnership “MySpace is home to the biggest community of musicians on the web, and there are genuinely brilliant acts out there ready to rock a bigger stage and let’s face it – it doesn’t get much bigger than playing to a packed house for one of the world’s most famous rockers’.

Music PR: Lily Allen and Dizzee Rascal lead nominations for The Ivors

On May 14th, 2010 James wrote on the subject of Celebrity PR,Event PR,Music PR,Uncategorized.

LONDON, Friday 14th May 2010: Final preparations are underway for the 55th annual Ivor Novello Awards with Lily Allen and Dizzee Rascal leading the nominations.

The singer-songwriters who recently completed a co-headlining tour together have two nominations apiece and will compete against the very best in British songwriting and composing talent when the awards take place at London’s Grosvenor House on the 20th May.

023-lilly-allen

Lily Allen, along with her co-writer Greg Kurstin, has been nominated twice for her hit song, The Fear, in the categories ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’, an award won last year by Elbow’s One Day Like This, and for the ‘PRS for Music Most Performed Work’ award. Lily’s recent tour co-headliner, Dizzee Rascal, has also been nominated twice for Best Contemporary Song for his number one hit single Bonkers, co-written with Armand Van Helden, and for the ‘Album Award’ for the platinum selling Tongue N’ Cheek which he wrote together with Nicholas Detnon.

dizzeerascal

Nick Hemming, The Leisure Society’s songwriter and guitarist who gained a nomination in 2009 as an unpublished writer for the ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ has received a further nomination for the 2010 awards. Save It For Someone Who Cares – nominated in the ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ category, is taken from the group’s self produced debut album, The Sleeper, which received lavish critical praise on its release, being named a Rough Trade album of 2009 and the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Album of 2009.

NickHemming

Neil Hannon, who is best known for fronting The Divine Comedy, is nominated for the Album Award alongside Thomas Walsh from Pugwash for their cricket inspired work, The Duckworth Lewis Method. Their eponymous album is steeped in the love of cricket and pop and was released in July 2009, a few days before the start of the 2009 Ashes series.

neilhannon

Neil Hannon and Thomas Walsh commented “We, the Duckworth Lewis Method, are politely jubilant to be nominated in the best album category of this year’s Ivor Novello Awards. What joy! What honour! Our hippopotomously titled debut album really was as fun to make as it sounds. And it is to the eternal credit of this august, nay, July institution that ‘a record about cricket’ should be afforded the same opportunities as its less niche compatriots.”

patch william

Fledgling band Patch William, a London based four piece who met whilst studying at Bristol University, will fight it out for the ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ award alongside Nick Hemming and Lily Allen. The band, who have been championed on Twitter by Stephen Fry, have been nominated for their single The Last Bus, taken from their critically acclaimed debut album which was exclusively released through iTunes.

Patch William commented “”We are a relatively unknown band on an independent label. When we recently signed with Chrysalis Music, we looked starry-eyed at the two Ivor Novello statues at the entrance. Not in our wildest dreams did we imagine that we’d be nominated for ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’, WOW”!

The 2010 awards are also shaping up to be a particularly good year for women song writers and composers with several nominations across the categories, including a nomination for acclaimed film composer, Hélène Muddiman in the ‘Best Original Film Score’ category. Hélène, nominated for the 2009 film Skin, is the first woman to be included in the category for 12 years.

To reflect the changing world of music, BASCA have also introduced a new category for the 55th Ivor Novello Awards, Best Original Video Game Score. The first nominations in this category come from Empire: Total War, Killzone 2 and Savage Moon: Waldgeist.

Commenting on the new category, Mark Fishlock, BASCA director and member of The Ivors Committee, comments: “The Ivors has always sought to reflect the ever-changing world of songwriting and composing. The video games market has matured beyond recognition and big budget orchestral scores are regularly being commissioned. Writing music for games also requires a number of specialist skills compared with conventional film scoring, such as non-linear and multi-layered composition. This is a very exciting development and one which hopefully will be fully embraced by the rapidly growing games world.”

Patrick Rackow, Chief Executive of BASCA comments ““The strength and diversity of the works nominated this year is a testament to the talent and range of British music writers. It’s great to see a mix of established and new writers, and I would like to thank this year’s judges for all of their hard work”

Ellis Rich, Chairman of PRS for Music says “Every year the Ivors celebrates the best of UK song writing talent and it is wonderful to see some new names in this year’s mix. Our sponsorship of the awards is one of the oldest partnerships in the music industry and we’re delighted to support this highlight of the musical year once again.”

Held at the Grosvenor House on Thursday 20th May 2010, The Ivors are presented by BASCA in association with PRS for Music, and continue to be acknowledged as one of the most coveted awards in the industry. Previous winners include Sir Paul McCartney, Madonna, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Sting, Annie Lennox and Radiohead.

Thriller Voted Most Influential Pop Video in MySpace Poll

On May 4th, 2010 admin wrote on the subject of Music PR,Online PR.

London, Monday 4th May 2010: Michael Jackson’s epic pop video for his 1983 global hit Thriller has been named as the most influential and groundbreaking pop video in music history beating stiff competition from the likes of Queen, Peter Gabriel and Johnny Cash.

thriller

The survey, which was specially commissioned by MySpace, enlisted the help of a stellar panel of judges, comprised of some of the UK’s leading music and entertainment critics, to provide a shortlist of the 20 most groundbreaking and innovative promos in music history which was then put to the public vote. Over 1000 music fans took part in the poll providing a definitive top 10 list of the most influential videos of all time.

The 14 minute Thriller video, directed by filmmaker John Landis (An America Werewolf in London, The Blues Brothers), was the most expensive video of its time costing US$500,000. It is widely regarded as having changed music videos forever by merging filmmaking and music for the first time, and for breaking new ground by achieving prominent playtime for a black artist on MTV. Jackson co-wrote the screenplay with Landis which famously features the voice of horror legend Vincent Price.

American indie band OK Go’s 2006 viral hit Here It Goes Again came second in the survey with 11.7%. Featuring the band’s 4 members in a choreographed routine on treadmills shown in one continuous take, 17 attempts were needed before the video was finally completed. It still remains one of the most watched clips on You Tube, having been viewed over 48 million times.

okgotreadmill

Britney Spears’ breakthrough hit, Baby One More Time, which propelled the solo star to stardom in 1998 came third in the poll. The video concept was conceived by Spears herself, who also chose the controversial sexy-schoolgirl outfit. Spears wanted the video to reflect the experiences of her fans by being set in school, the school it was filmed in the same that was used as the location for the movie Grease.

one-more-time

A-ha’s groundbreaking promo for Take on Me also ranked highly. Released in 1984, the video memorably used rotoscoping, a combination of live action and sketched animation for a romantic fantasy starring lead singer Morten Harket and actress Bunty Bailey. The video won 6 awards in the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards.

The top ten most influential music videos are:

1. Thriller, Michael Jackson, 1983 – 15.2%

2. Here It Goes Again, OK Go, 2006 – 11.7%

3. Baby one more time, Britney Spears, 1998 – 11.2%

4. Take on Me, A-Ha, 1985 – 8.6%

5. Johnny Cash, Hurt, 2003 – 7.6%

6. Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen , 1975 – 5.6%

7. Daft Punk, Around the World, 1997 – 5.4%

8. Weapon of Choice, Fatboy Slim, 1999 – 4%

9. Sledgehammer, Peter Gabriel, 1986 – 3.7%

10. Beastie Boys, Sabotage, 1994 – 3.5%

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody came sixth in the survey. Made in 1975 it is widely regarded as being one of the first promotional videos ever recorded. The video was filmed in less than 5 hours and sent immediately to Top of the Pops who played it later that week. The famous flames that are superimposed over the introduction were added weeks later, after the single had already reached number 1.

bohemiam rhapsody

Also featured in the top ten is Peter Gabriel’s 1986 hit, Sledgehammer, which won a record-breaking 9 MTV Music Video Awards. His video used claymation, pixilation and stop-motion animation. Gabriel worked with Nick Park from Aardman Animations on sections of the video, which involved Gabriel remaining under a sheet of glass for 16 hours whilst filming the video a single frame at a time.

Will Francis, site editor of MySpace UK, said ‘Only two of the top ten were made this century which shows despite massive advances in technology, a brilliant idea coupled with a great star is an unbeatable format’.

The shortlist of 20 titles, in date order:

Alongside the show-stopping performances there will be another healthy dose of Lovebox’s summer shenanigans; with the 40 acre site playing host to numerous other stages, performances and activities.

The infamous NYC Downlow also returns to Lovebox for 2010 after a year’s hiatus. This life-size ruin of a NYC tenement will resurrect New York’s golden age and festival-goers can expect to enjoy an eclectic mix of disco, soul, funk and dance.

As well as offering a diverse music experience – the bustling food market, Sourced Market, returns again, serving up culinary treats direct from the best stalls at Borough and Broadway markets. There will also be a broad program of theatre, art and comedy for those wanting to take timeout from the music performances.
