Young Apprentice returns to BBC ONE

On October 18th, 2011 admin wrote on the subject of Celebrity PR,Event PR,Reality TV PR,Television Industry PR,Television PR,The Apprentice.

LONDON, Tuesday 18th October 2011: Following the huge success of the first series Lord Sugar returns with his search for a Young Apprentice, on BBC One this autumn.

An avid supporter of young people in business, Lord Sugar will offer twelve of the UK’s most promising and ambitious teenagers the opportunity of a lifetime; a chance to follow in his entrepreneurial footsteps by competing for the title of Young Apprentice.

For eight weeks from 9pm on Monday 24th October, twelve young candidates will make the leap from classroom to boardroom and face an education like no other as they embark on a series of tough tasks, pushing their skills to the limit. The young candidates will face the same cut-throat competition as in the adult series – it’s survival of the fittest as the tasks become more challenging.

From all corners of the UK, each of the aspiring moguls have been selected for their academic flair and burning passion for business – Lord Sugar has spotted something in all of them, but only one can succeed in becoming the next Young Apprentice.

Aged across 16 and 17 years old, most of these tycoons of tomorrow are still in education and span a broad range of backgrounds from council estates to private schools; they include an award-winning fashion designer, a young farmer, a published author, a filmmaker, a keen horticulturalist, a photographer and a former head-girl.

Lord Sugar started in business at the same age and expects his prospects to be able to do the same.  They believe that they have the capability, passion and raw business talent to take on the challenge and be the one to win access to a fund worth £25,000. The fund will go towards kick-starting his or her business career, and will be tailored to their individual career prospects and development.

All think they have what it takes, but can they prove themselves when the pressure is on? Lord Sugar warns them: “You are young, don’t try and pretend like you know it all because believe me it’ll be embarrassing.” With tasks including making and selling ice cream, launching a new brand of deodorant and creating an online video game, the candidates will quickly learn that Lord Sugar doesn’t hang about when it comes to separating the wheat from the chaff.

Lord Sugar is, once again, aided by his no-nonsense advisers Nick Hewer and Karren Brady who will scrutinise the candidates’ every move during the weekly tasks.

They will live in a luxurious townhouse in St John’s Wood, North London, giving them a taste of the lavish lives they dream of. For some, it’s their first time away from home, but for all it’s the chance to experience what life could be like as a high flyer. When the winner is crowned they will be given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be mentored by Britain’s most famous boss.

Lord Sugar’s search for his next Young Apprentice is about to begin…

Young Apprentice is a talkbackTHAMES production for BBC ONE. Michele Kurland is the Executive Producer, Colm Martin is the Series Editor. Executive Producer for the BBC, Jo Wallace.

Kenton Allen appointed as Advisory Chair for MGEITF 2012

The MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival today announces that Kenton Allen, Chief Executive Big Talk Productions, has been appointed as Advisory Chair for the 2012 festival.

Allen takes over the reins from BBC Director of Vision George Entwistle, who held the position for the duration of the 36th festival year.

Kenton is a multi award-winning programme-maker with credits including the BAFTA-winning sitcoms The Royle Family and Rev and the Oscar-winning film Six Shooter. He was Creative Head of BBC Comedy and BBC Comedy North between 2003 and 2008, producing and executive-producing a diverse range of programming including the BAFTA-winning That Mitchell and Webb Look.

Kenton’s appointment as Chief Executive of Big Talk Productions has seen rapid growth in the Independent Producer over the last 3 years, alongside a number of high profile and award winning productions and a nomination for Best Independent Production Company at last year’s TV festival.

Kenton Allen said: “I think George did a brilliant job this year, and I relish the prospect of getting stuck in and making 2012’s Festival the best it can be. There has never been a more creative and exciting time to be working in television and no other event showcases this like the MGEITF festival. It’s a very special event and I haven’t missed one in 15 years so I feel very honoured to be taking on the role and I’m really looking forward to helping make it unmissable.”

Elaine Bedell, MGEITF Executive Chair said: “I’m very pleased that Kenton is taking on the role of Advisory chair.  In recent years, the role has been held by executives working for the main UK broadcasters, and I think it will be a real benefit for the UK’s main television festival to be chaired this year by someone with such standing from the independent sector, who perfectly understands the pressures and demands of the UK production business.  Added to which, Kenton’s award-winning production experience in comedy and entertainment promises a 2012 festival programme with more than usual stardust and sparkle.”

MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival takes place 24 – 26 August 2012. For further details visit www.mgeitf.co.uk

Private Eye magazine celebrates 50 glorious years

★ Ian Hislop celebrates 25 years at the helm

50th book launch to mark historic milestone

V&A exhibition to celebrate landmark anniversary

LONDON, 8th September 2011: Private Eye is Britain’s first, most successful and indeed only fortnightly satirical magazine. Founded in 1961, it has somehow managed to survive for half a century during which it has consistently entertained, informed and irritated its readers.

Over five turbulent decades it has developed its unique mix of jokes and journalism, comedy and campaigning, gags and gossip, laughter and libel, to cover the public life of the nation.

From political plots to royal revelations, from City scandal to media manipulation, from legal lunacy to municipal madness. (That’s enough alliteration – Ed)

This year, Britain’s number one best-selling news and current affairs magazine marks its 50th anniversary on 25th October with a series of exciting events throughout the Autumn.

Ian Hislop comments: “I do not want anyone to think that this is all just a huge celebration of ourselves. Our 50th year is a chance to look back and take a dispassionate view of how marvellous we are.”

Released on Tuesday 20th September to kick off the anniversary year celebrations, Private Eye: The First 50 Years, an A-Z, is a lavishly illustrated, definitive history of the magazine, charting its rise from 300 copies of the first edition on 25th October 1961, to a fortnightly readership of 700,000, steered at the helm by Editor of 25 years, Ian Hislop.

Written by Private Eye journalist Adam Macqueen, who has been with the magazine since 1997, Private Eye: The First 50 Years, an A-Z, is an unsurpassed, fascinating history of Private Eye over the past 50 years.

Forming an in-depth, witty and occasionally critical appraisal, Macqueen has created the long-awaited volume containing everything you ever wanted to know about the  nation’s favourite satirical organ. At last the origin of Ugandan discussions will be disclosed, along with the story behind that Andrew Neil photo, and the identity of Britain’s Biggest Pseud. Plus the inside story of the magazine’s many high-profile legal battles, scoops and staff bust-ups, told by those who were there.

In addition to a wealth of new material, the book features exclusive interviews with current editor, Ian Hislop, his predecessor Richard Ingrams and co-founder, Christopher Booker, plus a host of other key figures past and present.

The book also contains exclusive reminiscences and revelations about former contributors including Peter Cook, Auberon Waugh and Willie Rushton, in addition to rare archive material, unseen photographs and an abundance of cartoons from the likes of Nick Newman, Tony Husband and Michael Heath – many never before published.

Adam Macqueen comments: “I’ve been digging up stories for the Eye for fourteen years, but a lot of the stuff I found out about the mag surprised even me. When I discovered it surprised the editor too, I figured I must be doing something right.”

With the phone hacking scandal, the superinjunction fiascos and the European financial meltdown it has been a quiet year for news. Luckily Private Eye was there to fill the gap.

Available from Wednesday 12th October, the 2011 Private Eye Annual presents the very best of Private Eye’s unique blend of wit and humour,  jam-packed with pages of parody, the funniest spoofs, gags, cartoons, photo bubbles and topical humour.

Consistently found in the best seller chart and selling in excess of 78,000 copies last year alone, it is a must for every Christmas stocking.

Opening on Tuesday 18th October and running for three months until 8th January 2012, Private Eye at the V&A is on display in the V&A’s Studio Gallery in South Kensington, London.

Private Eye at the V&A is a free exhibition and will explore the wealth of artistic talent that the magazine has fostered by showcasing the original artwork for some of the finest and funniest Private Eye cartoons. Over its 50-year history, the Eye has published and promoted the work of more than 90 artists, many of whom started their careers at the magazine, including Gerald Scarfe, Ralph Steadman, Willie Rushton, Barry Fantoni, Nick Newman, Michael Heath, John Kent and Ed McLachlan. The illustrations will be shown in thematic sections on politics, royalty and social observation. They are richly varied in style and tone and take the form of single cartoons with captions, long-running strips and caricatures.

Ian Hislop has chosen 50 of the best trademark front covers, one from every year the magazine has been published. The front covers will be arranged in a timeline, offering a graphic satirical history of the news over five decades.

The exhibition will evoke the atmosphere of the magazine’s Soho office, with a recreation of the editor’s paper-strewn desk. There will also be seldom-seen ephemera from the magazine’s past campaigns and court cases, as well as a life-sized cutout of Tony Blair, a stuffed dog, a flying Robert Maxwell and a giant inflatable banana.

Notes to Editors:

Private Eye is the UK’s number one, best-selling news and current affairs magazine, edited by Ian Hislop.

Richard Ingrams served as editor from the 10th issue until 1986, and was then succeeded by Ian Hislop in 1986. It offers a unique blend of humour, social and political observations and investigative journalism. Published fortnightly, the magazine is read by over 700,000 readers.

Ian Hislop has edited Private Eye since 1986, and was absolutely thrilled to be voted the 97th most powerful person in the media by the Guardian this year.

Commentating on “a stellar year for the man who celebrates 25 years in the editor’s chair in October – half the life of the magazine” The Guardian continued “The Private Eye editor has challenged privacy injunctions, led the way on important stories – and has also managed to boost sales.

Hislop’s work has put privacy injunctions firmly in the spotlight. But less glamorous campaigns have also succeeded at the magazine, where sales of more than 200,000 a fortnight are the best for nearly 20 years.

Even in recent months, the In the Back column has led the way on care homes, Southern Cross and the failings of the Care Quality Commission, and Rotten Boroughs broke an important story on South Tyneside council’s legal battle with Twitter. The magazine revealed problems at Doctor Who – and who would want to be a sleazy hack with Street of Shame on the lookout?

Hislop’s personal appearances on behalf of the magazine, whether on Radio 4′s Today programme or before Commons committees, have been impressive, which is perhaps not surprising given his lengthy TV career.

He continues to be a driving force of BBC1′s Have I Got News for You. And successes such as Ian Hislop’s Age of the Do-Gooders this year have also seen him identified as one of BBC2′s representative faces by controller Janice Hadlow.”

Ian has made countless television and radio appearances, as panellist, essayist and presenter. Credits range from Newsnight Review, Question Time and University Challenge (‘The Professionals’), to Radio 4 series on the history of tax, the Victorians and church architecture.

As a writer, Ian progressed from Spitting Image to write sketches for Harry Enfield and television plays for Maureen Lipman and Dawn French. Most recently he co-wrote the family sitcom, My Dad’s the Prime Minister.

Ian Hislop was honoured to receive the British Society of Magazine Editor’s highest award, The Editor’s Editor.

Adam Macqueen

Adam Macqueen joined the Eye on work experience in 1997, and has been there ever since, apart from two years when he ran away to become deputy editor of the Big Issue. He writes mostly for the Street of Shame and Media News pages, as well as compiling the Number Crunching Column.

He has also freelanced for a great many other newspapers and magazines, and had a weekly slot as co-presenter on the Sandi Toksvig show on LBC as well as regularly appearing on Sky News.

His previous book, The King of Sunlight: How William Lever Cleaned Up The World, was a chosen title on both Simon Mayo’s book club on Five Live and A Good Read on Radio 4.

Show Me The Funny: ITV launch search for a stand-up superstar

On July 12th, 2011 admin wrote on the subject of Celebrity PR,Comedy PR,Event PR,Reality TV PR,Television Industry PR,Television PR.

LONDON, Tuesday 12th July 2011: Stand-up comedy is one of the toughest jobs in showbiz and ITV1’s new seven-part reality series, Show Me The Funny, is on the hunt for the next stand-up superstar in comedy.

Beginning at 9pm on Monday 18th July and hosted by award-winning comedian Jason Manford, Show Me The Funny features 10 comedians with varying levels of experience as they battle it out to win the ultimate prize in British comedy; £100,000, a nationwide multi-date UK tour throughout September and their very own DVD at Christmas.

Over six grueling weeks, the funnymen – and women – will be sent to all corners of the country and tasked with various challenges, with the winners deciding the running order of that week’s gig. The series will culminate in a live final where the remaining comedians will play to the biggest audience of their careers at London’s world-famous Hammersmith Apollo, in front of a 3,000 strong audience and millions of voting viewers at home.

Each week, the comedians aim is to find inspiration for five minutes of material to be performed at a gig in an unusual venue and to potentially raucous crowds, before facing the scrutiny of the judges. From a hospital and an army base to a secondary school and rugby club, the group will be followed as they complete their tasks and deal with the pressures of writing and performing fresh material.

The climax of each show will see the comedians come face-to-face with the judges; the much-loved comedian Alan Davies and the much-feared comedy critic Kate Copstick. They will decide who has made the cut for the next gig and who will find themselves on their way home. Each week, Alan and Kate will be joined by a revolving roster of some of the best known names in UK comedy including Jo Brand, Johnny Vegas, Bob Mortimer, Ross Noble, Cannon & Ball and Jimmy Tarbuck, to assist in their decision.

The 10 comedians, who all love making people laugh, but have yet to find their big break, feature fresh-faced newcomers to seasoned professionals, including a serving police officer, a former undertaker and an ex-professional model. One of the comedians has never been paid for a gig, another recently quit their job to do stand-up full time, and one is using annual leave from their regular job to compete in the show, whilst others have been making a full-time living out of the profession for years.

Jason Manford said: “Stand-up comedy has never been bigger and there has never been a better time to make this show. I’m excited to be involved in the series – it’s very rare to have the ability to make pretty much anyone laugh, and I hope Show Me The Funny will find that comic.”

Alan Davies commented: “After years on the circuit, I know exactly what it’s like to deal with the pressures of making an audience laugh and this is an extremely tough challenge.”

Kate Copstick commented: “People are calling it The X Factor for comics. But I think it’s more like Masterchef for comics. Which I suppose makes Alan John Torode, and me the irritating shouty one.”

Executive Producer and CEO of Big Talk Productions, Kenton Allen, said: “Stand-up comedy is the toughest job in show-business and the only job in the world where you are judged every 10 seconds by a paying audience expecting big laughs. Show Me The Funny is the real deal. There is no safety net. Expect to laugh your socks off, cry your eyes out, and some parts are best watched through your fingers.”

Making people laugh isn’t as easy as it sounds, and Show Me The Funny will reveal to the audience at home the pressures, creativity and nerve involved in pulling off the ultimate stand-up routine.

This is the ultimate search for comedies next big thing. It’s survival of the funniest.

MEET THE COMEDIANS

From left to right: Stuart Goldsmith, Patrick Monahan, Cole Parker, Prince Abdi, Ellie Taylor, Jason Manford, Tiffany Stevenson, Rudi Lickwood, Ignacio Lopez, Dan Mitchell, Alfie Moore

Alfie Moore
Age: 47

By day, Alfie is a serving Police Sergeant; by night, he is a stand-up comedian. Comedy was firstly a hobby, ignited by Alfie 3 years ago, after a night out at a local comedy gig with his wife. He was very inspired by the acts and desperate to get up on stage and give it a go. Alfie is now performing regularly and over the past two and a half years has done over 250 comedy gigs and 50 after-dinner speeches.

Alfie Says: “The general perception is that cops take themselves too seriously and are too stuck-up and secretive. But if they see a copper who can laugh at himself and his organisation, that could do a lot of good.”

Cole Parker
Age: 37

Cole started his stand-up career at the age of six after entering a talent contest in Norfolk. Despite coming second, Cole was undeterred and a love of stand-up was born. Something of a bad-boy, Cole has a reputation for being a smart, solid act who can handle any audience. Popular on the comedy circuit, he regular plays all the big clubs country wide and internationally.

Cole says:“I’ve had this terrific passion for stand-up since a very young age. In the past, I have been maligned as an alpha male, but you should not judge people by appearances.”

Dan Mitchell
Age: 34

Charity worked Dan is a former Undertaker who sites “boredom” as the reason for his move into stand-up five years ago. Dan has since performed over 500 gigs after starting in small pubs in the rural Welsh countryside. He has performed at a variety of places from the Green Man Festival where he was critically acclaimed, to being booed off stage in a strip joint.

Dan says: “What do I love about stand-up? When it’s going well, the buzz is unlike anything else. When it fails, of course, you blame the audience!”

Ellie Taylor
Age: 27

After seeing a friend perform a five minute set, ex-model Ellie decided she should give it a go. A keen drama student at school, Ellie went on to study at York University and has recently given up her job in corporate events to concentrate on comedy full time. She has never been paid for a gig.

Ellie says: “I know I can perform, but I have never gigged outside London! Please don’t say I’m brave – that’s just a polite way of saying stupid!”

Ignacio Lopez
Age: 24

After University, Spanish barman, Ignacio got a job as an usher in a cinema, to get him closer to short films; another of his big passions. His colleagues at the cinema pushed him into comedy at the end of 2009 and he hasn’t looked back, despite being only paid for two gigs so far.

Ignacio says: “My goal is to play to as many people as possible. It will really help me progress and I see this as a way of jumping a few steps ahead.”

Patrick Monahan
Age: 35

Patrick may well be the only stand-up in the world of Irish-Iranian decent, but brought up on Teeside. He sees his background as a real bonus and credits talking about it as his breakthrough. Patrick has headlined the prestigious Comedy Store and performed around the world from the west of Ireland to Dubai.

Pat says: “There are no other Irish-Iranian comedians with a northern upbringing on the circuit – I’m all three rolled into one!”

Prince Abdi
Age: 28

A Somalian-born, former primary school teacher who was once on Millwall FC’s books, Prince Abdi won the Your Comedy Star competition at the Edinburgh Festival in 2007. Despite only just going full time, he has been on the circuit for four years and recently came second in the Barbican New Act of the Year competition.

Prince says: “I love doing stand-up. I could be a role model;I’m from a deprived area of London where opportunities are limited.”

Rudi Lickwood
Age: 47

Rudi has been on the circuit for the best part of two decades after first coming onto the comedy scene as an Eddie Murphy look-a-like in 1989 aged 26. Through this, he travelled all over the world, and when Beverley Hills Cop was released he was sent to Scandinavia, where he basically lived a celebrity lifestyle.

Rudi says: “Not everyone will like everything I do. I know I’m challenging the status quo in comedy. I’m not saying step over the line – I take my responsibilities very seriously, but my comedy is there to make you think.”

Stuart Goldsmith
Age: 33

When he was younger, Stuart ran away to join the circus, but upon discovering that the circus entailed more press-ups than he deemed reasonable, he fled! He moved on to street performance and acting, before settling on stand-up. He has gone on to perform all over the UK and Europe and he has supported sell-out comedians Mark Watson and Paul Sinha on their national tours.

Stuart says: “I’m used to having to claw an audience out of thin air! You walk onto a deserted street with just a suitcase and your wits, and you have to make things happen or you can’t pay the rent!”

Tiffany Stevenson
Age: 33

Tiff’s route to stand up has been quite diverse, but since taking the mic in 2006, where she initially performed as her WAG character ‘Savannah Dior’ she has been ahead of the curve. Tiffany also runs and co-hosts “Old Rope”, a weekly new material night with the award winning Phil Nichol at The Phoenix in London.

Tiffany says: “All comedians love trying out new material. There is nothing more satisfying than performing something and getting an instant response. I hope I can rise to the challenge.”

THE JUDGES

Jason Manford – Host

Jason Manford is a writer, comedian, actor, radio and television presenter. He was tipped to be a comedian from a very young age, but despite being a joker in his youth, Jason only got into comedy by chance. After leaving school at the age of 17, he began collecting glasses at the Buzz Comedy Club in Chorlton-cum-Hardy. One night a comedian didn’t turn up, so Jason filled in. Six gigs later, he was crowned The City Life North West Comedian of the Year.

His first major television appearance was as a guest on the Channel 4 panel show, 8 out of 10 cats, hosted by Jimmy Carr. He later went on to replace Dave Spikey as Team Captain in 2007 and continued for five series.

Jason has presented several TV shows including; Tonightly the topical comedy entertainment show for Channel 4 (2008) and the comedy entertainment show Comedy Rocks with Jason Manford for ITV1 (2010). He has just finished filming the second series of the ITV1 comedy game show Odd One In which is on air now. He is also currently on tour, which is running until November 2011, by which time he will have entertained over 300,000 people live with this show, sharing hilarious tales of shower mishaps, visiting “dangerous” animals and nappies. His first book – a hilarious yet warm memoir of growing up funny in a big working class Manchester family and his second DVD – Jason Manford Live; are both released in the autumn.

Jason cites Billy Connolly as the first comedian he saw when he was 9 years old, and as the very first inspiration for him to become a comedian. Peter Kay helped him at the beginning of his career offering Jason advice and sharing contacts.

Alan Davies –  Judge

Alan Davies began performing stand-up comedy in 1988 just five months after leaving university, with a three month stint in Canada performing at various Fringe Festivals and Comedy Clubs. Upon his return, he secured a TV spot within six months. In 1991, he was named Time Out’s Best Young Comic. He appeared on Tonight with Jonathan Ross in 1992 and continued touring and performing in the UK and Canada, winning the Edinburgh Festival Critics Award for Comedy in 1994.

In 1998, a DVD of his most successful stand-up tour, Urban Trauma was released following a sell-out season at the Duchess Theatre. It was later shown on BBC One.

Alan’s best known acting role is as the title character in the BAFTA-winning BBC drama, Jonathan Creek. He is also a permanent panelist on multi-award winning BBC quiz show, QI. His most recent acting role was the title character Roland White in the BBC Comedy Whites.

Kate Copstick – Judge

Kate Copstick has judged on numerous comedy awards including the Perrier, Amused Moose, SYTYF and Malcolm Hardee Awards. The first person to give Michael McIntyre a five star review, Kate Copstick has seen more live comedy, and spotted more new talent, than any other comedy critic in the UK.

For years she has been the most controversial critic at the Edinburgh Festival, with a fearsome reputation on the circuit as being the toughest of the tough, who can either make or break a career. Love her or hate her, her opinions are often stark, honest and occasionally brutal.

Her one woman show – Hardly Camp at All played New York, and at the 2001 and 2002 Edinburgh Festival she was described as “the future of Comedy”.

She appeared on On the Waterfront with Andrew O’Connor which gained cult status because of their parody “The Flashin Blade” created by Russell T Davies. She was a regular on Channel 4’s Biteback and After The News.

She has worked extensively with Jimmy Logan and has also shared stage, and/or screen time with, variously, Tom O’Connor, Bernard Manning, Nicholas Parsons, Fry and Laurie, Graham Norton, Richard O’Brien, The Chuckle Brothers, Basil Brush, John Inman and every major drag queen in London and Blackpool.

Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model is back

On June 21st, 2011 admin wrote on the subject of Celebrity PR,Event PR,Fashion PR,Model Search PR,Television PR.

LONDON, Tuesday 21st June 2011, Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model is back…and the competition for the Top Model crown is bigger than ever.  This year the search reaches the next level as the judges hit the road for nationwide auditions, with no stone left unturned in the trawl for true beauty. Exclusive to Sky Living, the seventh series promises more rivalry, higher drama and hotter glamour…

Supermodel Elle Macpherson and the elite panel commence their search by travelling to six cities throughout the UK on the quest to find a fresh faced fashion starlet, and from the opening audition stages right through to the intense finale, viewers will follow the competitors every step of the way.

Returning alongside Elle Macpherson are an esteemed judging panel comprising leading designer Julien Macdonald, supreme stylist Grace Woodward and male model Charley Speed. With their extensive list of fashion credentials, these experts know what they are looking for in the next face of high fashion, and competition between the four has never been fiercer.

Should the hopefuls survive the audition rounds and a mass cull in the dreaded Boot Camp, where 90 girls go down to 13, the models in the making will have their fashion savvy tested at every turn.  Over thirteen weeks the competitors must perfect their catwalk attitude, show off their editorial edge in photo shoots and impress the judges at the dreaded weekly eliminations, when one imperfect pose or clumsy catwalk could mean they are sent home.

This series will also see Elle and the panel joined by a number of high profile guest judges, who hail from all corners of the fashion world, to help the experts decide which girl should continue on in the competition.  Among those lending their professional opinion are former supermodel and fashion legend Janice Dickenson, international model Tyson Beckford, designer Henry Holland, pop superstar Sophie Ellis Bexter and Irish beauty Yvonne Keating. They will be on hand to oversee an exciting line up of challenges, which include a daring nude shoot, where the girls must quickly lose their inhibitions, an underwater photo session, and of course the dramatic makeovers, where emotions run high.

For the winner, this year’s enviable prize package includes a contract with international agency Models 1, a cover and feature within Company magazine and a contract with Revlon cosmetics, whom Elle herself is a global ambassador for. In addition, for the first time ever, the chosen girl will begin her jet-set model lifestyle with a luxury holiday to the Sandals Resort in Jamaica and a brand new Peugeot RCZ.  She will also kick start her fashion career by fronting an international campaign with High Street über-brand Miss Selfridge.  Previous series winners have taken part in campaigns for Swatch, Sony and ASOS, as well as being photographed for Russian Vogue.

The search for the UK’s newest catwalk queen begins as Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model returns on Monday 4th July at 9pm, exclusively on Sky Living.

On June 6th, 2011 admin wrote on the subject of Event PR,Online PR.

LONDON, Monday 6th June 2011: It may not sound like the most romantic destination, but the macabre-sounding Copse Hill Road in Lower Slaughter, Gloucestershire, has been named as the most romantic street in Britain in this year’s Google Street View Awards.

The 2011 awards, which were specially devised by Google to find and celebrate Britain’s best streets, focused on three specific categories; Most Romantic Street, Best Shopping Street and Britain’s Hippest Street.  A shortlist of 20 nominations was compiled by the Google panel of experts from the world of travel, shopping and lifestyle including Visit Britain, Lonely Planet, Mr & Mrs Smith Guides and a host of celebrities and leading journalists, before being put to the national vote.

Over 20,000 people voted within a two week period from Friday 6th- Friday 20th May, and competition was fierce. The three winning streets faced tough opposition from 57 other streets across 10 regions in the UK.

Proving they are streets ahead of the competition, Copse Hill Road in Lower Slaughter takes the crown for Britain’s Most Romantic Street. Britain’s Hippest Street goes to South Shore Road in Gateshead, which stormed to the top in its category, and Bondgate Within in Alnwick takes the title of Best Shopping Street.

  2. Front Street, Bamburgh
  3. The Royal Mile, Edinburgh
  4. Mwnt, Y Ferwig
  5. The A591, Grasmere, Lake District

TOP 5 ‘HIPPEST’:

  2. Call Lane, Leeds
  3. Whitecross Street, London
  4. Seel Street, Liverpool

The 2011 Awards follow the huge success of the inaugural Street View Awards last year, which named The Shambles in York as Britain’s Most Picturesque Street.

Today’s winners announcement is supplemented with new research on Britain’s use of Street View which suggests that Google’s revolutionary tool is more popular than ever before;

The survey results reveal that Brits are using Street View an average of twice a week to discover new shops, restaurants, hotels and businesses across the UK.  More than half of Brits polled (55%) use Street View to plan a visit to a UK tourist attraction and the surrounding area, stating that the look of a street will affect whether or not they choose to visit. Street View currently allows users to view and navigate 360 degree street-level imagery in over 90% of the United Kingdom.

Shortlisted nominations for each of the award categories were compiled by a panel of experts from the worlds of travel, lifestyle and popular culture including tourism authority VisitBritain, author David Else (Lead Author of the The Lonely Planet Guide to Great Britain), leading journalists Miranda Almond (Fashion Editor, Vogue), Bill Prince (Deputy Editor of GQ), Tim Noakes (Deputy Editor of Dazed & Confused), Kay Barron (Fashion News and Features Editor, Grazia), Jane Hamilton (Consumer Editor, The Sun), Lisa Scott (Travel Editor, Metro), Jade Beer (Editor of Brides Magazine), TV personality Sarah Beeny (Property Ladder), Chrissy Illey (renowned lifestyle journalist),TV presenter Dawn Porter, X Factor Stylist Grace Woodward, Rebecca Holman (Editor of Handbag.com) and Juliet Kinsman (Editor in Chief of the Mr & Mrs Smith Guides).

The experts were asked to nominate streets that fulfilled a pre-set criteria for each category.  For Britain’s Most Romantic Street, the panel were looking for aspects that make a street romantic, such as beautiful architecture, stunning views, a romantic ambiance, secluded getaways, restaurants/hotels and street lighting. The streets nominated for Britain’s Hippest Street, offered a hip ambiance and vibrant atmosphere. This could include clubs, art galleries, shops, cafes, bars, restaurants or street art. For Britain’s Best Shopping Street, each street nominated should have offered a broad range of shopping options from independent boutiques to high street, clothes, food and home wares; across a diverse price range.

Their nominated streets highlighted a series of British treasures ranging from famous tourist attractions, to hidden avenues and courtyards across the UK.

Laura Scott, External Relations Manager for Google said: “The Google Street View Awards celebrate the many fantastic streets that Britain has to offer. The results reveal a diverse cultural landscape; from romantic hot spots, to hip destinations and shopping locations – these are now firmly on the map! With Brits using Street View at least twice a week to check out hotels, shops and landmarks, I’m delighted that these awards help showcase Britain’s Best Streets.”

THE WINNERS:

Copse Hill Road, Lower Slaughter

Copse Hill Road’s win goes to show that the rather spooky name of the village, Lower Slaughter, did not deter users from checking out the location on street view and voting for it. Copse Hill Road is located at the centre of the quintessentially English village of Lower Slaughter. The street ticks all the boxes for romance, containing traditionally styled natural Cotswold sandstone houses, beautiful greenery, and the picturesque 13th Century church of St Mary’s. It offers couples stunning views and an incredibly romantic ambience, with lovers able to stroll hand and hand along the banks of the river the stream that runs through the village.  This popular destination for honeymooners is located in the English county of Gloucestershire, Lower Slaughter is known as one of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds.

Lisa Scott, Travel Editor of the Metro said: This road ticks all the boxes. I love how it winds past the stone cottages, the wild hedges and the church.”

Calum Milne, General Manager of Lower Slaughter Manor & Washbourne Court said: “I am chuffed to bits, what a wonderful accolade for such a beautiful village. The most romantic street in Britain and possibly the most romantic hotel in the United Kingdom. Lower Slaughter Manor, Queen of the Cotswolds.”

Chris Dee, Tourism Manager for the Cotswolds at www.cotswolds.com said: It’s true; the Cotswold is for lovers!  We know how many of our visitors use Street View – it’s an incredible resource for tourism. We are thrilled that this typical Cotswold street has been voted the essence of English romance by romantic Google users from around the world.”

South Shore Road, Gateshead

South Shore Road is rapidly becoming the place to see and be seen in the North of England, with it’s vibrant mix of the arts, exciting atmosphere, and breathtaking views across the Tyne.  Credited as being behind the regeneration of Gateshead, music venue The Sage and the art gallery BALTIC are located here, both of which are recognised for transforming both Newcastle and Gateshead into areas of vibrant culture. BALTIC is a major international centre for contemporary art and will host the Turner Prize 2011 in October. The Sage is a unique music venue, an international home for music and musical discovery, which has brought about a widespread and long-term enrichment of the musical life of the North East of England. Over the Bank Holiday weekend, one of the stages for the Evolution Weekender Festival was located on South Shore Road, with Katy B, Caribou and Annie Mac all performing there. The street was also used for the launch of Gateshead’s city bid, on 26th May 2011.

Sarah Stewart, Chief Executive of destination marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “South Shore Road really represents the cultural regeneration of NewcastleGateshead as it’s home to renowned attractions BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and international music centre The Sage Gateshead, both recognised as iconic symbols of the destination. South Shore Road forms part of the NewcastleGateshead quayside and provides unrivalled views of historic landmarks including the Tyne Bridge, Swing Bridge and the world famous St James’ Park – home to Newcastle United Football Club. It also acts as the pathway to the world’s first and only tilting bridge – The Gateshead Millennium Bridge – which celebrates its 10th birthday in 2011.  This relatively new street, which hugs the River Tyne, is deserving of the title ‘Britain’s Hippest Street’ given its location in the ‘hipster capital of the North’, as described in the new Lonely Planet Great Britain guidebook.”

Chrissy Illey, renowned lifestyle journalist said: “[South Shore Road] has spectacular views of the Tyne, with the Baltic art gallery is at the foot of it. It was a former flour mill and now houses a superb collection of modern art. Its presence alone singularly transformed the area into one of vibrant culture.”

Councillor Mick Henry, Leader of Gateshead Council, said: “Tens of thousands of visitors come to South Shore Road every year to visit BALTIC, take a stroll across the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, and listen to great music at The Sage Gateshead. All three are major international icons and it’s an absolute must-see for anyone coming to Tyneside. But we haven’t finished yet! We recently launched our bid for Gateshead to become Britain’s newest city – and needless to say we chose to do so from the centre of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge on South Shore Road.  It says everything that needs to be said about Gateshead – modern, hip, stylish and ambitious. This is a fantastic award. Gateshead is definitely a place where great things are happening, so I suppose it should be no surprise that other people think so too, but it is still a pleasant surprise when people put Gateshead on top. The Google Streetview Award is something that Gateshead will treasure.”

Claire Byers, BALTIC Deputy Director said: “The skyline of South Shore Road is known the world over, with the award winning Gateshead Millennium ‘winking’ Bridge, The Sage Gateshead and BALTIC. It not only offers fantastic views of the River Tyne but boasts some of the best contemporary art in the world, superb live music, festivals, events and delicious places to eat, drink and meet friends. No wonder it has come to symbolize NewcastleGateshead as one of the best locations in the country.”

Bondgate Within, Alnwick

Bondgate Within is the ideal Shopping Street, with its perfect blend of independent shops as well as on trend high street stores, selling everything the discerning shopper could ever hope for. Located in the historic Northumberland market town of Alnwick, Bondage Within is a wide spacious road fronted by attractive shops. It is loved for its mixture of family run shops that have been located on the street for generations with the latest fashion stores selling the latest must have items. Bondgate Within offers a real sense of history as the street is entered through the archway in Bondgate Tower, a 15th century stone three storey gatehouse.  Nearby is the visitor attraction of Alnwick Castle, home to the the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, renowned for its beautiful gardens and referred to as the “Windsor of the North.”

David Else, Lead Author of the Lonely Planet Guide to Great Britain said: “Part of a triangle of streets around the Old Market Building in this historic Northumberland town, Bondgate Within offers a great mix of high street stores and supermarkets with a wide choice of independent stores.”

Alan Symmonds, Mayor of Alnwick said: I am delighted that Bondgate Within in our town of Alnwick has won the prestigious Google Street View Awards for 2011 for best shopping street. Bondgate Within more than holds its own in the formidable list of nominees. As you enter the street through the ancient Hotspur Tower there is a historic panorama in which there is a wide range of shops and services that cater for both residents and visitors. The street is characterised by a large number of individual shops, many of which are well established family businesses and all of which pride themselves on offering a personal service to their customers.

This award  follows  other awards for Alnwick and confirms that it is a wonderful place in which to live and a fantastic centre for tourists.”

Carlo Biagioni, Chairman of the Alnwick Chamber of Trade said: I believe that Bondgate Within won the award because there are many independent retailers in that area giving excellent personal service. Also, the architecture including Bondgate Tower is spectacular and the cobbles are reminiscent of times gone by.”

Gordon Castle, County Councillor for Alnwick said: “This is great news for our town and follows on from the Country Life Magazine accolade of “Best Place to live in Great Britain” of a few years ago. The award is well deserved recognition that there are few shopping streets in the country so scenic, historic or impressive as Bondgate Within, and it is yet another reason for visitors to make the journey to a town without equal in the United Kingdom. Nowhere else will you find such fine buildings, such great historical interest, such a cluster of high class tourist attractions and excellent shops all set in amazing, uncrowded countryside right next to the finest coastline in Britain and overlooked by one of the greatest fortresses in the land.”
