The Emoji Report

the first piece of in-depth research on UK adoption of the visual language taking the world by storm.

Overview:

We helped mobile communications company TalkTalk Mobile devise a plan to launch Britain’s lowest priced unlimited SIM-only plan.

 The Campaign:

We created news story about the world’s latest obsession – emojis.

The campaign involved enlisting the help of a linguistics expert, Professor Vyv Evans and conducting an extensive piece of research.

Our results, from 2,000 British respondents, found that:

  • Emoji is the fastest growing new language in the UK
  • 72% of 18 – 25s find it easier to use emoji than words to express feelings
  • Over 40s lack confidence when using new visual language

The top 10 most popular – and confusing – emoji were also revealed.

We supported the news story by creating an emoji guide, an online video tutorial by Professor Evans to help the public’s understanding of emoji.

We also launched an ambient marketing stunt around London involving actors in 3 specially designed emoji heads to give the story an added picture element.

The news story, pictures and video were widely distributed to media as an all in one news package and our video embedded into dozens and dozens of sites including Mail Online, The Mirror, London Evening Standard, Yahoo and MSN
