The MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival is inviting broadcasters and Indies to enter for this year’s Arqiva Channel of the Year Awards. All festival delegates will be able to cast their vote before attending the live ceremony on 27th August at The Balmoral, Edinburgh.

Last year, Channel 4 won Terrestrial Channel of the Year for the first time since 2006, ending BBC One’s three year winning streak.

Non-Terrestrial Channel of the Year was awarded to BBC Three. Terrestrial Programme of the Year was awarded to the critically-acclaimed BBC One comedy Outnumbered, with E4’s multi award-winning The Inbetweeners winning Non-Terrestrial Programme of the Year following their 2009 Network and Fast Track Programme Award, which last year went to Misfits, E4’s cult, black comedy.

This year, the awards have been extended to eight categories with three new additions.

2011 marks the first year that Indies can enter the awards to showcase the shows and talent that they feel deserve industry acknowledgement, with the introduction of three new awards including Indie of the Year.

The Cross Platform Innovation Award rewards ideas that have spanned more than one platform or have used interactive technologies alongside television in new and exciting ways. They are for new products, content propositions or technologies that are genuinely taking the medium of television in a new direction. Anyone can enter – broadcaster, indie, specialist digital company, either on their own or as part of a team. As part of the entry criteria we will ask the entrant to state any relevant collaboration between content, technology or platform company.

The Producer or Director Debut Award is an opportunity for Indies and in-house production departments to showcase new talent who made their debut between 1st July 2010 and 30th June 2011, and reflect their values through innovative programmes.

Louise Benson, Festival Director commented: “We’re really excited to announce the call for entries for the 10th annual Arqiva Channel of the Year Awards. The addition of the three new categories allows more companies and individuals to submit their work for recognition and the Cross Platform Innovation Award shows that the TV Festival is acknowledging the many platforms that compliment TV in exciting and innovative ways.”

All non-terrestrial channels are being invited to enter for the Digital Channel of the Year and Digital Programme of the Year awards by submitting a two-minute showreel to the MGEITF office. Terrestrial channels, meanwhile, will be invited to submit a five-minute showreel and provide information on programming, commercial success, innovation, successful targeting, channel branding, broadband content and interactive services.

The showreel should showcase the best of the channel and include programming which has been broadcast or is due to transmit between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. The deadline for submissions is Thursday 21st April 2011.

All entries will be available to view on the festival website from late April when voting will open. Voters, made up of festival delegates, MediaGuardian readers and members of the public will vote by viewing videos and completing an online survey designed by new research partner GfK Media. The winners will be at the Arqiva Channel of the Year Awards ceremony on 27th August, in Edinburgh.

All GfK Media voters are offered the chance of winning a delegate pass and accommodation for the Festival.

Now in its 10th consecutive year, the Arqiva Channel of the Year Awards is in recognition of the increasingly competitive and often challenging market that today’s TV companies operate in, and to celebrate the creative, innovative and commercial solutions that both channels and production companies present. For details of previous winners click here

National Television Awards host Dermot O’Leary has the ride of his life, hitching a lift in the tardis with Matt Smith’s Dr Who in a spectacular opening to tonight’s National Television Awards live on ITV1 TONIGHT at 7.30pm.

Guided by the time-travelling Doctor, Dermot pays a flying visit to some of TV’s biggest names, including Bruce Forsyth, Ant & Dec, Dot Branning en-route to the star-studded ceremony at London’s 02 arena. The evening sees Matt Smith nominated in the Most Popular Drama Performance category, with Doctor Who shortlisted for Most Popular Drama.

Tonight’s glittering event will also showcase one of pop music’s most unlikely duets tonight – Happy Mondays legend Shaun Ryder and I’m A Celebrity winner Stacey Solomon. The performance is expected to include the indie anthem Step On.

X Factor winner Matt Cardle will also sing tonight, backed by a 40-piece orchestra. Chilean mine hero Luis Urzua, 54, has been flown in to present an award.

With Coronation Street currently celebrating its 50th Anniversary and making headlines after that tram crash, the stars of Weatherfield will be hoping to repeat last year’s NTA success with another win in the Serial Drama category. But as always EastEnders, who’ve just notched up their own 25th Anniversary, will give them a run for their money.

As the massively popular X-Factor prepares to conquer America will it be the viewers’ choice again in the Talent Show Category? Fierce rival Strictly Come Dancing has beaten it before and could waltz off with the prize again. Simon Cowell has a second contender here with Britain’s Got Talent. Dancing on Ice completes the list of nominees.

Host Dermot O’Leary will be inviting one lucky audience member up on stage on the night to present an award.

You can vote for your TV favourites by phone on 0901 888 2011. Calls cost no more than 26p per minute from a BT landline plus no more than a 12p connection charge. Calls should last no longer than 6 minutes. Calls from other networks may be higher and from mobiles will be considerably more.

Or you can vote free online at www.nationaltvawards.com New votes will be added to those submitted in the first round.

LONDON, Tuesday 19th January 2009; She’s used to taking a ring side seat as TV’s fiercest judge, but for one night only, Arlene Phillips hits the dancefloor as she performs alongside finalists from So You Think You Can Dance at the 15th anniversary National Television Awards tomorrow night.

Arlene, a judge on the Saturday night entertainment show, will cement her TV comeback after a very public departure from Strictly Come Dancing last year when she hits the stage at the O2 arena to perform in front of all of TV’s best loved faces, including her former panellists from Strictly.

Arlene, in a stunning Alexander McQueen frock, and her troupe will dance to Christina Aguilera’s hit Aint No Other Man.

Arlene’s on stage appearance comes as the ten remaining finalists from So You Think You Can Dance perform an electrifying routine; with the National Television Awards switching to a new venue and welcoming a new host in Dermot O’Leary, the ceremony will showcase more performances than ever before, with The X Factor stars John and Edward and Joe McElderry also on the bill.

It’s a tense night for the Strictly contingent as they go head-to-head with The X Factor to battle it out for the coveted Most Popular Talent Show award – voting lines close at mid-day on Wednesday 20th January.

The National Television Awards will broadcast live on ITV1 on Wednesday 20th January from 7.30pm.

Double Act In Exclusive National Television Awards Performance

The most talked about act in X Factor history make their eagerly anticipated TV return when teenage twin sensations John and Edward, AKA Jedward, perform exclusively at the 15th anniversary National Television Awards.

The Irish double act, whose charisma-infused dance routines and inimitable hair styles sparked national debate last year, will hit the stage at the 20,000 capacity O2 Arena for their first performance since X Factor, on Wednesday 20th January. The show will be broadcast live on ITV1 from 7.30pm.

John and Edward will be performing in front of the biggest names in British television, at one of Europe’s biggest venues, the O2 Arena.

While details of the track they will be performing remains under wraps, the stage is being set for an entertainment spectacle. The stunning set is being decorated with thousands of Swarovski crystals.

The pair’s legendary X Factor performances included show-stopping versions of Ghostbusters, We Will Rock You and Oops, I Did It Again.

The twin’s performance comes as The X Factor battles it out to be named Most Popular Talent Show, alongside nominees Strictly Come Dancing, Britain’s Got Talent and Dancing on Ice, in one of the Awards’ most hotly contested categories.

Bigger than ever before, the National Television Awards celebrates its 15th anniversary with a move to the O2 Arena and a new host, Dermot O’Leary, who takes the reigns from Sir Trevor McDonald.

To see Jedward live, and join the stars on their big night at the NTAs, call Ticketmaster on 0844 847 2536 or book online at www.theo2.co.uk/nta

LONDON, Tuesday 5th January 2010: The giants of the small screen are fighting it out for the ultimate prize – and who takes home an NTA trophy on the biggest TV night of the year is entirely down to YOU.

The final round of voting is now officially open for the biggest-ever National Television Awards (NTA), taking place on Wednesday, January 20 at London’s O2 Arena, hosted for the very first time by Dermot O’Leary, and broadcast live on ITV1 from 7.30 pm. And here are the key battles in which you can help choose the winners:

In the Talent Show category The X Factor takes on Strictly Come Dancing, Britain’s Got Talent, and Dancing On Ice. The X Factor will be looking for revenge after Strictly caused an upset last year by waltzing off with the trophy. But the Subo factor could give Simon Cowell a second chance of silverware with Britain’s Got Talent.

Fans of Ant and Dec have more than one chance to vote for their heroes, with the irrepressible Geordie duo up for no less than three awards, namely Ant And Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here! in the Entertainment Programme and the boys themselves as Entertainment Presenters, where they are likely to face stiff competition from Paul O’Grady and first-time NTA shortlisters Holly Willoughby and Michael McIntyre.

The three Davids – Jason (A Touch Of Frost), Tennant (Doctor Who), and Threlfall (Shameless) – gang up on the solitary Philip Glenister (for Ashes To Ashes) in Drama Performance, while The Apprentice squares up to Top Gear in yet another heavyweight clash, this time for Factual Programme.

Throw in Newcomer – where the EastEnders v Coronation Street battle is fought out by Ryan Malloy (Neil McDermott) and Graeme Proctor (Craig Gazey) – and the brand new Star Travel Documentary category that sees Joanna Lumley (In The Land Of The Northern Lights) take on Stephen Fry (In America) in a National Treasure face-off, and it’s clear that the only place to be on January 20 is in the best ringside seat in the house, watching live on ITV1 at 7.30pm.

The spectacular NTA set features thousands crystals by Swarovski – prepare to be dazzled!

How to vote here . . .

Simply go to itv.com/nta to vote for your favourites, or call the special NTA voteline on 0901 888 2009. Calls cost 25p per minute from BT landlines plus a 9p connection charge, while calls from other networks may be higher and calls from mobiles will cost considerably more.*

One lucky member of the audience will become a star for the night! During the ceremony Dermot will be inviting a member of the public up from the audience onto the stage to present a major award. So make sure you are dressed to the nines so that you’ll sparkle in the spotlight.

Vote now, and don’t forget to tune in to ITV1 from 7.30 pm on Wednesday January 20th when new host Dermot O’ Leary helms a spectacular star-studded ceremony to reveal the winners as voted for by YOU!

*Calls should last no longer than 6 minutes and you need to call from a touchtone phone to register your votes. Voting opens at 00.01 on January 5th and closes at midday on 20th January. Multiple vote restrictions apply see Terms and Conditions at www.nationaltvawards.com

LONDON, Tuesday 8th September 2009: The TVQuick & TVChoice Awards last night honoured the cream of the TV crop in a star-studded ceremony at London’s Dorchester hotel.

Soap’s biggest names sparkled, while the cast of Ashes To Ashes and teen hit Skins rubbed shoulders with Dragons Den’s Duncan, Peter and Theo.

Popular duo Ant and Dec were big winners of the night after being presented with the first ever Outstanding Contribution Award to mark their 20 year careers in TV. They also triumphed in the Best Entertainment Show category with Saturday Night Takeaway.

But it was the Walford crew who took home the biggest haul of awards as EastEnders held onto its Best Soap crown as well as winning Best Soap Storyline for ‘Danielle and Ronnie’s story’. Actress Lauren Crace also picked up the gong for Best Soap Newcomer for her dramatic portrayal of Ronnie’s long-lost daughter Danielle.

Coronation Street was the other big soap winner of the night with onscreen couple Simon Gregson and Katherine Kelly honoured as Best Soap Actor and Best Soap Actress.

It was a magic night for the BBC’s Merlin – named as Best New Drama – whilst last year’s winner, Ashes to Ashes, stayed on top, winning the hotly-contended Best Drama Series. The show’s star Philip Glenister walked away with Best Actor for his role as chauvinistic Eighties detective DCI Gene Hunt.

Waterloo Road also received two prestigious accolades. The show came top of the class as Best Family Drama, and actress Denise Welch was recognised for her part as teacher Steph Haydock, taking home the Best Actress award.

Denise Welch had another reason to celebrate, joining her fellow Loose Women to pick up the coveted award for Best Daytime Show; the third year in a row the ITV1 lunchtime show has triumphed.

Britain’s Got Talent landed the award for Best Talent Show, while Lord Alan and The Apprentice enjoyed a second year as Best Reality Show. Former winners Top Gear and Deal or No Deal again lifted silverware, and there was a first time win for The Inbetweeners.

From Walford to Weatherfield, via Sherwood Forest, Barry Island and Billericay, the TVQuick & TVChoice Awards celebrate the very best of the small screen. Presented by actor and comedian Ben Miller, they raised money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

LONDON. Monday 7th September 2009. The long-list nominations for the biggest-ever National Television Awards (NTA) see some classic clashes in a magnificent new setting and with a brand new host. The awards, now in their 15th year and traditionally based at the Royal Albert Hall, will take place at London’s O2 arena in January and will be broadcast live on ITV1, with Dermot O’Leary taking over as host from Sir Trevor McDonald.

Produced by Indigo Television for ITV, the National Television Awards are the only TV awards entirely voted for by viewers, and as such are the most highly-coveted prizes in the TV world.

This year’s long-list includes a host of household names, new faces, and heavyweight clashes across all 11 categories. Here are just some of the key battlegrounds:

Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor go head-to-head once more in the fierce ongoing battle to be the UK’s most-loved Talent Show. Strictly just edged it last year, so will it be revenge this time around for Simon Cowell, who also has Britain’s Got Talent on the long-list?

Soap giants EastEnders and Coronation Street battle it out in the Serial Drama Category, with the ITV flagship hoping to finally bring its BBC rival’s four-year winning streak to an end.

Ant & Dec go for a record ninth win in the Entertainment Presenter Category, though strong competition is sure to come from last year’s Entertainment Programme winner Paul O’Grady and the awards show’s host himself, Dermot O’Leary. This category also throws up an intriguing contest between the former and current presenters of This Morning, Fern Britton and Holly Willoughby.

Fast-rising funnyman Michael McIntyre gets his first-ever NTA nomination, with his Comedy Roadshow slugging it out in the Comedy Programme Category alongside more established names such as Harry Hill’s TV Burp and Gavin And Stacey.

Piers Morgan, Phillip Schofield, and Martin Clunes each have three nominations apiece across three different categories, while two Hamlets will battle it out in the Drama Performance Category, as three-time winner David Tennant (Dr Who) takes on Kenneth Branagh (Wallander). Branagh’s brooding Scandinavian detective is just one of a host of small-screen policemen in the running here, with David Jason’s Frost and Martin Shaw’s George Gently among more than 20 officers on the long-list.

One final category to look out for is Star Travel Documentary, a new area dedicated to those well-known TV names who have travelled far and wide over the last 12 months. Among the nominees here are Joanna Lumley for In The Land of the Northern Lights, Billy Connolly for his Journey To The Edge Of The World, and the godfather of this particular genre, Michael Palin for his Around The World In 20 Years.

The show’s Executive Producer, Kim Turberville of Indigo Television, said that this year’s programme promises to be the biggest and best in the show’s 15-year history. “The move to the O2 means that even more viewers can be with us on the night,” says Turberville, “and their presence always makes for a truly electric and unforgettable atmosphere”.

NOTE TO EDITORS: viewers can vote online at www.nationaltvawards.com or pick up a free vote form from any high street branch of WHSmith All votes must be in by 30th September 2009.
